This week’s Friday Favorites comes from Jen Causey, photographer extraordinaire and the woman behind the Simply Breakfast blog and The Makers Project. While Jen is based in Brooklyn, she has spent a fair amount of time in Austin (though we wish she was here more!) Here are her picks for some Austin favorites through a visitor’s eyes.
1. I love all the cacti and succulents in Austin. My favorite garden store to visit used to be Gardens, where they had rows and rows of succulents. I was sad to hear that it is now closed. Living in the northeast, I do not get to see these growing from the ground too often, just in the ever-growing collection on my windowsill. I am always in awe of their beauty and I love the low maintenance of caring for them.
2. Micheladas from Hotel San Jose, must be sipped on the back patio. I have been on a constant search for something similar here in NYC, but have not been able to find one made quite as delicious. The bartender suggested a really dark beer, Zingu, as the base, and it was amazing.
3. And of course, you can’t have a michelada without thinking of Mexican food! Austin has amazing Mexican food. This can definitely not be replicated in the Northeast. I always have to bring loose fitting clothes when I visit Austin, as I’m a sucker for all the cheesy goodness. I could eat Mexican food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and often do when I’m in town.
